What is listeriosis? What causes listeriosis?

Listeria infection by a gram-positive motile bacterium called Listeria monocytogenes caused. The infection produces fever, muscle aches, and many people diarrhea. Severe infections can cause headaches, meningitis, seizures, and death. Most healthy people exposed to the bacteria minor or no symptoms, but some people, especially the elderly, pregnant women and their fetuses, newborns, and each are particularly susceptible to these organisms with a weakened immune system. Listeria bacteria are widely distributed throughout the world and are often associated with farm animals, which may show no signs of infection. Research shows that many animals are not affected carriers and they suggest that some people carry these organisms as part of their intestinal flora. With the exception of pregnant women and their fetuses or newborns, there is no direct transfer of Listeria from person to person.

The organisms (Listeria monocytogenes) that cause listeriosis probably been infecting humans for centuries. Listeria was first isolated from an infected WWI soldiers in 1918 and had many different names until 1940, when the genus and species names have been established. However, the bacteria initially transmitted as food borne pathogens were 1979. The bacteria can penetrate human cells and detected multiply in them. People with impaired immune systems have changed or cells. Less able, the distribution of these organisms in the blood or in other cells under control In 2010, a well-known species Listeria ivanovii, thought to only infect cattle, it was found that infect humans. There have been many outbreaks of the disease in the world; a recent event occurred related in Texas in October 2010 provisionally locally processed celery; 10 people were diagnosed with listeriosis, and five died. Most infected people had underlying medical problems or conditions. In 2011, about 146 people have been infected from Listeria contaminated melons and about 32 people were killed. In February 2012, over 1 million eggs were recalled to several processed in a processing plant were found to be contaminated with Listeria. The eggs were being marketed under the brand name of the Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papetti, silver water and healthy farms sold. The egg brands were sold in 34 states.
