Benign atypical cell (1)

Renal tubular epithelial cells from the urinary sediment of a patient with nephrotic syndrome. These cells have a high nucleocytoplasmic ratio and resemble adenocarcinoma cells, but are benign atypical cells changed because of the massive proteinuria. Many dysmorphic red blood cells and oval fat bodies are seen. Information about the proteinuria was needed so that these cells could be discriminated from malignant atypical cells. Sternheimer stain, X400.

Multinucleate and enlarged squamous cells, one with a cytoplasmic vacuolation, from the urinary sediment of a patient with cancer of the cervix. These cells probably were affected by radiotherapy. Sternheimer stain, X200.
