Fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea and diarrhea (or both) the usual symptoms of listeriosis are connected. These symptoms usually last up to a week and spontaneous. But in some people, the organisms can spread to the brain. The symptoms of meningitis (stiff neck, headache and fever), altered mental status (confusion, decreased mental activity), incoordination and convulsions develop infections of the brain. Brain abscesses can also occur and cause similar symptoms. The incubation period between exposure and symptoms is highly variable and can be up to two months according to some researchers.
Pregnant women who are otherwise healthy usually only minor symptoms. However, Listeria organisms in pregnant women often cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or the cause of the infection, and possibly death of the newborn.
Occasionally localized infections of the skin may occur, especially in humans, animals infected with Listeria treat. These skin infections often lead to other complications such as brain infection
